#Scriptchat TOPIC: Save the Cat and all that is outlining.
EURO had an open discussion about out all that is outlining and the strategies we all use that work for our individual tastes. USA chat had guest Anne Lower, @princess_scribe, from Save the Cat on hand to discuss her thoughts on Blake Snyder’s Beat Sheet approach. Fun was had by all, and many opened their eyes to a new way of starting a script. Read and enjoy! @jeannevb

8:00 pm DreamsGrafter: We can talk about beatsheets or any of the chapters but it'd be great to hear your opinions too. #scriptchat
8:02 pm DreamsGrafter: Do you subscribe to Save The Cat theories or do you have other processes? #scriptchat

8:04 pm carter_andrewj: Save the Cat is useful, but I found my writing improved more when I figured out *why* those rules worked &started to break them. #scriptchat
8:04 pm yeah_write: I use the beatsheet to outline both novels and scripts. Then I start with "The Board." #scriptchat
8:04 pm SharkGoddess: @yeah_write Euro, #scriptchat?
8:05 pm PennyAsh: @DreamsGrafter I use it instead of an outline, and depending on the length I double it or x3 like @yeah_write #nano #scriptchat
8:05 pm yeah_write: @DreamsGrafter *waves, blows kisses* #scriptchat
8:05 pm DreamsGrafter: I love the whole Save The Cat analogy. My fave film example being Al Pacino in Sea of Love. Great Save The Cat moment. #scriptchat

8:08 pm DreamsGrafter: Re Save The Cat beatsheet, my concern is forcing the plot to fit the page counts. Anyone else think that? #scriptchat
8:08 pm yeah_write: @filmutopia Save the Cat is a way of outlining your work based on 3 sct structure. Beats of story. #scriptchat

8:08 pm carter_andrewj: @alli_and_that Exactly. There's no "rules" as such. It's better to figure out where Cat-esque guidelines work (or don't) & why. #scriptchat
8:09 pm KrisTheScript: @filmutopia it's the first book the late Blake Snyder wrote. Good book 2. Saving the cat is one of the beats in many screenplays #scriptchat

8:09 pm lizziside: I've used STC's beat sheet which helps though I adjusted along the way. A lot. #scriptchat
8:09 pm yeah_write: @DreamsGrafter Use it a a loose map, not chiseled in stone. It saved me hours of outlining my current thriller #scriptchat
8:10 pm alli_and_that: @DreamsGrafter The beat sheet is flexible though - it's good as a starting point and to make sure that you've hit crucial beats. #scriptchat
8:10 pm thetissuetalk: I know that a lot of UCLA scribes are very loyal to Save the Cat. #scriptchat
8:10 pm KrisTheScript: @DreamsGrafter I hear what you are saying. However I've found Save The Cat beatsheet invaluable when trying to hold to format. #scriptchat
8:10 pm PennyAsh: @DreamsGrafter If you start from the story angle STC becomes a tool for plotting, novel vs script is just the formatting #scriptchat
8:10 pm art1032: Thanks for explaining :) @yeah_write @filmutopia #scriptchat
8:10 pm DreamsGrafter: @filmutopia i.e. in Sea of Love when Al Pacino hints to the father that there's something going on inside & dad takes son away. #scriptchat

8:12 pm DGCooper82: I'm working on a screen play for class. It involves swing dancing. What's the best approach to writing the dance scenes? #scriptchat
8:12 pm KrisTheScript: @DreamsGrafter @filmutopia I think Blake actually used a situation in a script where the protagonist actually saves a cat! #scriptchat
8:12 pm sam_gurney: As with all screenwriting books, I find the ideas most effective when used as a troubleshooting guide. Pick & choose what works. #scriptchat
8:12 pm JC_Crissey: Greetings to all. #scriptchat
8:13 pm carter_andrewj: Be wary of STC's "Fun and Games" part of Act2 - if the plot's not moving forward you'll lose your audience. #scriptchat
8:13 pm alli_and_that: @DGCooper82 Hunt out scripts for movies like 'Centre Stage' and 'Save The Last Dance' and see how they write their dance scenes. #scriptchat
8:13 pm KrisTheScript: @yeah_write Mine too. Blake Synder was a brilliant guy and I was lucky to be taught by him. #screenwriting #scriptchat
8:13 pm DreamsGrafter: @carter_andrewj That makes more sense, so it's a screenwriting tool as opposed to being a template? #scriptchat
8:13 pm filmutopia: #scriptchat OK - I've got it. It's a script guru's template for explaining structure. (have fun guys, you really don't need me this week)
8:14 pm yeah_write: Save the Cat, is used in a screenplay/story to make a character likable, and thus the title of the book series. #scriptchat
8:14 pm alli_and_that: @sam_gurney I agree. Write what feels natural for you then when you find problems, go back and see what might help you fix. #scriptchat

8:42 pm RobTobin: RT @PennyAsh: You can read too many "how to" books too. At some point you just have to jump in and do it #scriptchat
8:42 pm PennyAsh: @yeah_write LOL me too, I usually call it reserch so it sounds like I'm working #scriptchat
8:42 pm yeah_write: @DreamsGrafter DM coming. #scriptchat
8:42 pm DreamsGrafter: @lisabarrass Hi Lisa! :) #scriptchat
8:42 pm carter_andrewj: RT @yeah_write @PennyAsh I use "how to" books for procrastination. <-- Really? I prefer Twitter ;) #scriptchat
8:43 pm filmutopia: #scriptchat I like beat sheets. I can't imagine writing without them. I really hate structural rewrites. Rewrites should deepen, not fix
8:43 pm sam_gurney: @yeah_write @PennyAsh At least it's constructive procrastination! #scriptchat
8:43 pm yeah_write: Twitter too. RT @carter_andrewj: RT @yeah_write @PennyAsh I use "how to" books for procrastination.
8:43 pm PennyAsh: @carter_andrewj @yeah_write Twitter = researching the human social condition #scriptchat
8:43 pm lisabarrass: @DreamsGrafter - Hi Mina, good chat tonight #scriptchat
8:43 pm alli_and_that: RT @carter_andrewj: ALL writing is exposition - the trick is disguising it. Having specific plot sections for it is risky. #scriptchat
8:44 pm yeah_write: Yeah, what he said! RT @sam_gurney: @yeah_write @PennyAsh At least it's constructive procrastination! #scriptchat
8:44 pm PennyAsh: True :) RT @sam_gurney: @yeah_write @PennyAsh At least it's constructive procrastination! #scriptchat

8:44 pm carter_andrewj: @PennyAsh Ooo, I hadn't thought of that one. *Opens excuse notebook...* #scriptchat
8:44 pm jeannevb: *waves to EURO #scriptchat crew* I'm in #nanowrimo hell.... plus behind on my @ScreenwritingU homework. Hope ur enjoying STC cat
8:46 pm yeah_write: STC gave me my first "Aha!" moment in writing structure when I was writing novels. #scriptchat
8:47 pm alli_and_that: @carter_andrewj @PennyAsh @twatterer I use it to work on cutting down the words I use on the page. 140 characters is restricting #scriptchat
8:47 pm PennyAsh: @carter_andrewj LOL glad to help #scriptchat
8:47 pm filmutopia: #scriptchat Every time screenwriters discuss structure I realise I'm in the wrong biz. I'm busy writing "fondle the giraffe" right now ;-)
8:47 pm carter_andrewj: STC's "All is Lost" is the 1 thing I consider essential - protag *must* fail with all other options before making *that* choice. #scriptchat
8:47 pm lizziside: @filmutopia Outlining is essential and rewrites necessarily include fixing if u feel a different beat surfacing as u go along. #scriptchat
8:47 pm PennyAsh: @alli_and_that Good one, tight writing never hurts :) #scriptchat
8:47 pm KrisTheScript: @PennyAsh it is a useful observation in time old tradition. The danger is becoming a slave it it, can kill creativity. #scriptchat
8:48 pm carter_andrewj: ...otherwise, how is the audience to understand the magnitude and significance of that decision? #scriptchat
8:48 pm DreamsGrafter: RT @carter_andrewj: STC Structure: Intro-to-Situation/Active-Question-Posed/Nothing-Happens/Direction-Returns/Exploring-Protag-Choice/Choice/Finale #scriptchat
8:48 pm Exoc0r: @filmutopia Exactly, I can't either. Can't beat a beat sheet:P #scriptchat
8:49 pm PennyAsh: @KrisTheScript Exactly. Which is why I love beatsheets, they let me outline without killing the need to write the story #scriptchat
8:49 pm yeah_write: @KrisTheScript Even with beatsheet and Story Board, I still find myself improving as I write. #scriptchat
8:49 pm DreamsGrafter: :( character 1st? RT @KrisTheScript: once the structure is in place the magic of the characters can fulfilled in rewrite/edit. #scriptchat
8:49 pm DreamsGrafter: RT @alli_and_that: @carter_andrewj Ditto. I can't write if I don't know the characters. They won't work with me if I don't buy them dinner first. #scriptchat
8:50 pm lizziside: RT @yeah_write: @KrisTheScript Even with beatsheet and Story Board, I still find myself improving as I write. #scriptchat
8:50 pm yeah_write: @DreamsGrafter beat sheet is the spine the story is the body parts, hopefully w/o too much fat. #scriptchat
8:50 pm PennyAsh: @DreamsGrafter My stuff ia always character first, then situation and plot #scriptchat
8:50 pm carter_andrewj: @PennyAsh I almost set out to make an outline kill that need. If the story's worth it - I'll get it back again. #scriptchat
8:50 pm StuckintheMidl: RT @PennyAsh: You can read too many "how to" books too. At some point you just have to jump in and do it #scriptchat
8:50 pm alli_and_that: @carter_andrewj: STCs "All is Lost" is essential - protag *must* fail with all other options before making *that* choice. #scriptchat
8:51 pm DreamsGrafter: RT @alli_and_that: Personally, I use structures like STC when I get stuck, not at the beginning of the writing process. #scriptchat
8:51 pm PennyAsh: @carter_andrewj An art teacher told me once you can talk (outline) an idea to death. I just jump in and go :) #scriptchat
8:52 pm yeah_write: I find that the detailed outline helps when I've had to take time off from project and start again more than anything. #scriptchat
8:52 pm alli_and_that: @yeah_write Sometimes a fresh viewpoint is what a story needs though. #scriptchat
8:53 pm jeannevb: I do love outlining & use a combination of beat sheets fr STC & Hero's 2 Journeys. But in #nano, I experimented w/o outline 1/2 #scriptchat
8:53 pm carter_andrewj: @PennyAsh Oh it's certainly possible to do that - hence why I always get *some* writing down before starting with an outline. #scriptchat
8:53 pm jeannevb: It was very interesting exp to let chars go free, but I found instinctively, I plot via char dev 2/2 #scriptchat
8:53 pm lizziside: Outlining is particularly important if you can't stay on a project all day long every single day of the week. #scriptchat
8:53 pm DreamsGrafter: RT @yeah_write: @DreamsGrafter beat sheet is the spine the story is the body parts, hopefully w/o too much fat. #scriptchat
8:53 pm chained: Heres the screenwriting books i use http://is.gd/h4hrC #scriptchat hope it helps you write better
8:54 pm jeannevb: RT @lizziside: Outlining is particularly important if you cant stay on a project all day long every single day of the week. #scriptchat
8:54 pm KrisTheScript: @DreamsGrafter Do I have to make a choice? It all works hand in hand for me. Character depth comes with rewrites. #scriptchat
8:54 pm dizzydentfilms: Aristotle's Poetics has been around since 335 B.C.. There's a reason for that. That's the only book you need. #scriptchat
8:55 pm PennyAsh: @carter_andrewj I find if it's a good story I'll be able to see it, like watching a movie, so I write what I see. #scriptchat
8:55 pm carter_andrewj: Story Building: Concept>Plot>Chars>Theme. Then destroy the 1st 3, start with Theme & put the right pieces of the others back in. #scriptchat
8:55 pm DreamsGrafter: @alli_and_that I've heard great things about The Writer's Tale! Good luck w/ McKee. Haha. #scriptchat
8:55 pm alli_and_that: RT @PennyAsh: @carter_andrewj I find if its a good story Ill be able to see it, like watching a movie, so I write what I see. #scriptchat
8:56 pm thetissuetalk: Or if you're on a really tight deadline! RT @lizziside: Outlining is particularly important if you can't stay on a project... #scriptchat
8:56 pm jeannevb: @chained don't know if any1 answered ur #eatpraylove quest, but for me, it sucked bc prot wasn't active #scriptchat
8:56 pm chained: I'll finish by saying what ever how to books the screenwriters of #eatpraylove used are ones to avoid ! #scriptchat
8:56 pm PennyAsh: @carter_andrewj Rarely ever do I talk it out or do a formal outline, beatsheets are for pacing and adding in twists or sub plots #scriptchat
8:56 pm alli_and_that: @DreamsGrafter 'The Writer's Tale' is brilliant. McKee is great - if you can read 'Story' you deserve to call yourself a writer. #scriptchat
8:57 pm DreamsGrafter: @KrisTheScript Not at all. Just make sure your character drives the plot and not other way round. #scriptchat
8:57 pm jeannevb: @carter_andrewj I do concept>theme>char>plot, then make sure theme is conveyed in both chars & subplots too #scriptchat
8:57 pm DreamsGrafter: @KrisTheScript I've learnt through trial and error and am still learning about that. ;) #scriptchat
8:58 pm alli_and_that: @carter_andrewj @PennyAsh That's interesting - I find my twists and subplots just happen out of the characters. #eachtotheirown #scriptchat
8:58 pm PennyAsh: @lizziside I have 8 wips going right now in various stages, none are outlined beyond a simple generic beatsheet #scriptchat
8:58 pm Shanipedia: @alli_and_that Does Story as a Book On Tape count? ;) Listen to it on my iPod all the time when stuck. #scriptchat
8:58 pm jeannevb: amen ;) RT @DreamsGrafter: @KrisTheScript Ive learnt through trial and error and am still learning about that. ;) #scriptchat
8:58 pm DreamsGrafter: @alli_and_that I find McKee's too interested in formula ... Can't finish it. #scriptchat
8:59 pm DreamsGrafter: RT @carter_andrewj: I'm sure STC's rules worked perfectly for Blake Snyder. The trick is to figure out your own rules for your own creative process. #scriptchat
8:59 pm carter_andrewj: @PennyAsh @alli_and_that Everyone has their own way of working. Best advice is to just keep doing whatever works for you. #scriptchat
8:59 pm yeah_write: Great idea.RT @Shanipedia: @alli_and_that Does Story as a Book On Tape count? ;) Listen to it on my iPod all the time when stuck #scriptchat
8:59 pm alli_and_that: @Shanipedia Only if it's read by Stephen Fry. :D #scriptchat
8:59 pm PennyAsh: @carter_andrewj Absolutely, that and read read read #scriptchat
8:59 pm DreamsGrafter: Agree. RT @PennyAsh: You can read too many "how to" books too. At some point you just have to jump in and do it #scriptchat
9:00 pm DreamsGrafter: @jeannevb Honeyyy! You #nano star ... Hope it's going well babe! #scriptchat
9:00 pm PennyAsh: @alli_and_that Sometimes mine do but usually I sort of slip them in sideways :) #eachtotheirown #scriptchat
9:00 pm alli_and_that: @DreamsGrafter McKee certainly has strong viewpoints. But if you read it for curiosity, not study, it's very interesting. #scriptchat
9:01 pm kingisafink: 3rd that. RT @dreamsgrafter: Agree. RT @PennyAsh: (Lots of) "how to" books too. At some point u just have to jump in and do it #scriptchat
9:01 pm yeah_write: Great chat this afternoon/ Euro evening. Thanks Mina! #scriptchat

9:02 pm DreamsGrafter: @alli_and_that I keep trying to. ;) #scriptchat #mckee
9:02 pm lizziside: @PennyAsh I couldn't. Maybe when I'm more pro, now it's vital I check back on the outline. Even if I don't stick to it. #scriptchat

9:05 pm DreamsGrafter: @alli_and_that Will do, thanks! #scriptchat
9:05 pm lizziside: @PennyAsh Totally agree. It's really a question of tuning it up. Which is why they're tools and not bibles. #scriptchat
9:05 pm thetissuetalk: Thank you, #scriptchat. Learned a lot this week. Structure/beatsheet/outlining is a tough one to grasp on one's own, even w/ books.
9:06 pm PennyAsh: @lizziside Exactly :) #scriptchat
9:06 pm KrisTheScript: @DreamsGrafter If it feels right I go with it. Plot or character lead...it's not hard and fast for me. #scriptchat

1:18 am jeannevb: @sethruffer haha I'll take the gift ;) #scriptchat
1:18 am princess_scribe: @karlabry - STC has novelists who contribute to the blog. Structure is structure. #scriptchat
