ScriptChat 1.10.10 - Script Endings

#Scriptchat TOPIC: Endings: Do u know ending before u begin or discover it as u go? Do u try for upbeat endings or whatever works w/story?

We returned to our regular chat session this week with a lively discussion on endings.  Please be sure to read both the EURO and the American chats, as typically foreign and American filmmakers have different philosophies on endings.  This is precisely the reason we supply the topics for an open global discussion.  We all have something to learn, no matter what side of the pond we’re on.  As usual, wthashtag site is down, so the transcript is posted backwards… scroll down to begin reading.  Or maybe we’re just messing with you to see if you can read backwards while drinking your tequila… @jeannevb
EURO Moderator 8pm GMT: @DreamsGrafter, Mina Zaher
American Moderator, 8pm EST: @jeannevb, Jeanne Veillette Bowerman

yeah_write @Daleylife Free is good until you are serious enough to start sending your work out. #scriptchat -9:24 PM Jan 10th, 2010

zacsanford2 @Daleylife Yeah, as you learn, Celtx is great to learn on. Not knocking the program completely. Tons of great included features #scriptchat -9:24 PM Jan 10th, 2010

Daleylife Alright. For real this time, bye- and thanks again! #scriptchat -9:24 PM Jan 10th, 2010

PennyAsh @jeannevb Have fun up there :) #scriptchat -9:23 PM Jan 10th, 2010

scriptsnthings @dawnbierschwal @ zacsanford2 @yeah_write I love VPF too! #scriptchat -9:23 PM Jan 10th, 2010

zacsanford2 @beingbrad I would never compare them to Microsoft. FD is the biggest, but them and MM are pretty consistent for ind standards. #scriptchat -9:23 PM Jan 10th, 2010

RockingtheRobin R @Daleylife: Darn. I guess I'll have to wait a few weeks to discuss writing software. #scriptchat /Twit me anytime on that. I want to know. -9:23 PM Jan 10th, 2010

yeah_write I need to look them up.RT @dawnbierschwal: @yeah_write K, thought you were recommending VPF. been very pleased with them. #scriptchat -9:23 PM Jan 10th, 2010

jeannevb @beingbrad I use MM... havent had prob w it. Used last 2 versions. #scriptchat -9:23 PM Jan 10th, 2010

Timsn I need to get going. See you at the #scriptchat See you in two weeks -9:23 PM Jan 10th, 2010

yeah_write @zacsanford2 So at 91 pages, my script will be cheaper. lol #scriptchat -9:23 PM Jan 10th, 2010

Daleylife @zacsanford2 Maybe if I actually enter the business I'll use FD. But for now, as I film/write for fun... free program works. #scriptchat -9:23 PM Jan 10th, 2010

beingbrad @zacsanford2 I'll try that. #scriptchat -9:22 PM Jan 10th, 2010

jeannevb @scriptsnthings u r VERY welcome. I love #scriptchat and all the peeps who participate. We're like a family.. always have ea other's backs -9:22 PM Jan 10th, 2010

beingbrad Final Draft is the microsoft of the screenwriting world. it is a massive island to itself and doesn't play nice. #scriptchat -9:22 PM Jan 10th, 2010

dawnbierschwal Good night and good luck, fellow screenwriters. #scriptchat -9:22 PM Jan 10th, 2010

karenquah @jeannevb Thanks luvly for all u do & transcript! And TY @yeah_write, @zacsanford, @KageyNYC for yet another great #scriptchat! #scriptchat -9:22 PM Jan 10th, 2010

dawnbierschwal @yeah_write K, thought you were recommending VPF... I;ve been very pleased with them. #scriptchat -9:22 PM Jan 10th, 2010

zacsanford2 @yeah_write Really, Fade In is doing an online pitchfest now? Lame. Only because I've never been invited to their pitchfest. :) #scriptchat -9:22 PM Jan 10th, 2010

LisaFromNYC @zacsanford2 budgeting is another topic. I don't have any idea how much things cost. #scriptchat -9:21 PM Jan 10th, 2010

zacsanford2 If you're using Celt, why not try the free FD demo and post your script to see the diff. Not always that big of a gap n pg count #scriptchat -9:21 PM Jan 10th, 2010

scriptsnthings @jeannevb Thanks for all you do, Jeanne! #scriptchat -9:20 PM Jan 10th, 2010

yeah_write @dawnbierschwal It's for Fade in Online pitchfest. I get the emails all the time. #scriptchat -9:20 PM Jan 10th, 2010

zacsanford2 @Daleylife Page count is partially how it is scheduled and budgeted in film. When I read a 110 page script it must budget @ 110. #scriptchat -9:20 PM Jan 10th, 2010

Daleylife Darn. I guess I'll have to wait a few weeks to discuss writing software. #scriptchat -9:20 PM Jan 10th, 2010

jeannevb Remember, next Sunday, there is NO formal chat bc of Golden Globes. Enjoy the show & see u in 2 weeks! #scriptchat -9:20 PM Jan 10th, 2010

dawnbierschwal @yeah_write Looks like a link for Fade Pitch Festival? #scriptchat -9:19 PM Jan 10th, 2010

Daleylife @zacsanford2 What's wrong with just a plain script written with Celtx? Couldn't you just fix the page errors? #scriptchat -9:18 PM Jan 10th, 2010

yeah_write @dawnbierschwal My @ replies aren't coming through to you on #scriptchat -9:18 PM Jan 10th, 2010

jeannevb Again, a great book for ending is The 3rd Act by @drewyanno #scriptchat -9:18 PM Jan 10th, 2010

zacsanford2 And please writers, you know how FD has a function to adjust line spacing or margins... DO NOT DO THIS EVER! #scriptchat -9:18 PM Jan 10th, 2010

karenquah @seanjsjourdan One of the best endings ever, huh? #scriptchat -9:18 PM Jan 10th, 2010

jeannevb RT @zacsanford2: Remember, Screenwriting is just like any business where you should always buy the best tools for the job. #scriptchat -9:18 PM Jan 10th, 2010

LisaFromNYC RE: pitching in PJs #scriptchat http://bit.ly/5RKPvG -9:18 PM Jan 10th, 2010

zacsanford2 @Daleylife I've seen a 110 Celtx script convert to 118 in FD. Every page adds to the budget, especially in indies. #scriptchat -9:18 PM Jan 10th, 2010

jeannevb @chained excellent... @ me when its up. If u have suggestions for chat topics, feel free to @ me #scriptchat -9:18 PM Jan 10th, 2010

chained #scriptchat I'll write article on my blog www.beingahuman.blogspot.com in next days about #screenwriting books I've read & what I #recommend -9:16 PM Jan 10th, 2010

zacsanford2 @Daleylife Celtx can be off by 5% on page count when exported into FD or MM. FD & MM export to Industry sched & budget prgrms #scriptchat -9:16 PM Jan 10th, 2010

karenquah @garnerhaines have you read the screenplay? it's superb. esp. the "She's my sister, my daughter" *slap* scene. #scriptchat -9:16 PM Jan 10th, 2010

PennyAsh @karenquah Pitching naked? That could be scary lol #scriptchat -9:16 PM Jan 10th, 2010

jeannevb RT @zacsanford2: If u use Celtx, it is good 2 learn, but FD & MM dont flub page count which could turn greenlight in2 red. #scriptchat -9:15 PM Jan 10th, 2010

beingbrad oh, there is also a contest for all unproduced canadian writers closing this friday http://bit.ly/5DRc0H #scriptchat -9:15 PM Jan 10th, 2010

yeah_write Clothing optional? RT @beingbrad: @yeah_write we were supposed to wear clothes? #scriptchat -9:14 PM Jan 10th, 2010

Daleylife @zacsanford2 Ugh. You mean I'll need to spend the money on FD? Celtx was so perfect. #scriptchat -9:14 PM Jan 10th, 2010

garnerhaines @karenquah I think it was great, but I've only seen it once. Other movies I've seen over 50 times. #scriptchat -9:13 PM Jan 10th, 2010

zacsanford2 To those who use Celtx, it is good to learn, but FD and MM don't flub on page count which could turn a greenlight into a red. #scriptchat -9:13 PM Jan 10th, 2010

LisaFromNYC I just got that same email lol RT @yeah_write Anyone interested in pitching in your pajamas? #scriptchat -9:12 PM Jan 10th, 2010

Daleylife @SKCOMEDY Wizard of oz IS a dream. The studio thought it was the only way it would work. In book- it was real. #scriptchat -9:10 PM Jan 10th, 2010

mckormickastley @PennyAsh I love the twist too, but damn you if I can smell it early, I'm pissed. #scriptchat -8:25 PM Jan 10th, 2010

jeannevb @yeah_write @rachlanger... dont forget me. Had rest AND motel for 15 yrs. U cant imagine the stories. Only few happy endings ha #scriptchat -8:25 PM Jan 10th, 2010

jamesdburch Now how about a flashback-frame, like "Sunset Boulevard"? You know exactly how it ends, but it's still engrossing. Why is that? #scriptchat -8:25 PM Jan 10th, 2010

rachlanger @yeah_write HA! Boy if we pooled our stories.... #scriptchat -8:25 PM Jan 10th, 2010

PennyAsh @jeannevb I love a twist at the end that reaches out and slaps the audience silly :) totally unexpected but still logical #scriptchat -8:24 PM Jan 10th, 2010

Timsn 500 Days of Summer had a great ending. It was so much better than Up in the Air IMHO #scriptchat -8:24 PM Jan 10th, 2010

GoldenAgeofGeek @jmiewald they're taking a chance on a newbie. Want to potential reward of franchise but minimal risk #scriptchat -8:24 PM Jan 10th, 2010

beingbrad A final twist is just a device, unless it emerges from chars & story (Usual Suspects), otherwise it's fun, but ultimately empty #scriptchat -8:24 PM Jan 10th, 2010

jeannevb true.. ppl's expectations RT @booksbelow: The genre sometimes dictates the type of ending, ie:mystery, romantic comedy #scriptchat -8:24 PM Jan 10th, 2010

seanjsjourdan Drives me crazy (it's a pet peeve of mine) @zacsanford2 Many movies have multiple unneeded endings. #scriptchat -8:23 PM Jan 10th, 2010

rachlanger @yeah_write I sure am! Just taking it all in. Working on TV writing, where endings are less of an issue, at the moment. #scriptchat -8:23 PM Jan 10th, 2010

jeannevb @zacsanford2 @WriteOnRideOn I HATE when I can guess an ending #scriptchat -8:23 PM Jan 10th, 2010

zacsanford2 It seems every horror film that I've read in the last two years always has to have the "Sixth Sense" type twist in the 3rd act. #scriptchat -8:23 PM Jan 10th, 2010

dawnbierschwal @zacsanford2 I think it's definately easier to guess an ending as a writer. #scriptchat -8:23 PM Jan 10th, 2010

jeannevb @GoldenAgeofGeek yes, but I think Am audiences have diff't expectations than foreign ones do. So we make the biz dec 4 happy #scriptchat -8:22 PM Jan 10th, 2010

dwacon @jamesdburch I think dad endings are mandatory in Asian cinema -- or at least melancholy #scriptchat -8:19 PM Jan 10th, 2010

RockingtheRobin R @jeannevb: @WriteOnRideOn agree! The endings of foreign feels seem less calculated and formulaic to me #scriptchat -8:19 PM Jan 10th, 2010

seanjsjourdan I get the feeling most screenwriter/filmmaker overwrite their endings - an example of one that felt just right: Up in the Air #scriptchat -8:19 PM Jan 10th, 2010

jeannevb @derek_stewart i typically THINK I know the ending when I start, but sometimes the chars surprise me ;) #scriptchat -8:19 PM Jan 10th, 2010

yeah_write @jamesdburch I agree. We Americans don't tolerate the downer ending as well. #scriptchat -8:18 PM Jan 10th, 2010

zacsanford2 Hmmm, my last couple tweets haven't posted from tweetchat. May have to do this another way. #scriptchat -8:18 PM Jan 10th, 2010

jamesdburch I think Chinese audiences are more tolerant of downbeat endings than those in U.S. (e.g., "The Curse of the Yellow Flower") #scriptchat -8:16 PM Jan 10th, 2010

beingbrad @GoldenAgeofGeek ack, loose ends being more related to plot, then? #scriptchat -8:16 PM Jan 10th, 2010

jeannevb @jmiewald not for me. If the dialogue sucked or chars not dev, even a great ending doesnt save it. I've already tuned out #scriptchat -8:16 PM Jan 10th, 2010

jmiewald I think Unbreakable is all right but the ending gets me every time. "He called me Mr Glass" :) #scriptchat -8:15 PM Jan 10th, 2010

dawnbierschwal I hate when a movie ends abruptly. I sit there in the theatre thinking (sometimes saying) "that's it? really?" #scriptchat -8:15 PM Jan 10th, 2010

PennyAsh @dwacon You can tie up loose ends and still set up a sequel, it's in making the viewer care about all the characters #scriptchat -8:15 PM Jan 10th, 2010

dwacon Agree with dawn on seven pounds. But you kinda go in knowing the ending... lots of hints being left about it. #scriptchat -8:15 PM Jan 10th, 2010

GoldenAgeofGeek @dwacon see bit about cliffhangers. Need track record to play for obvious sequel #scriptchat -8:15 PM Jan 10th, 2010

beingbrad @GoldenAgeofGeek i'm thinking more of the small characters that interact occasionally with the main, secretary, neighbour, etc #scriptchat -8:13 PM Jan 10th, 2010

GoldenAgeofGeek @jmiewald cliffhangers. Can't do it w/out track record. Producers not going to give a newbie a 2nd film automatically #scriptchat -8:13 PM Jan 10th, 2010

GoldenAgeofGeek @dawnbierschwal about genre. On other hand nobody expects flowers and Disney music when writing about the Holocaust #scriptchat -8:10 PM Jan 10th, 2010

beingbrad Just to clarify here, by endings are we talking all of act 3? #scriptchat -8:10 PM Jan 10th, 2010

jeannevb As the last taste in the audience's mouth, the ending has to make sense, give them satisfaction, & not be predictable IMHO #scriptchat -8:09 PM Jan 10th, 2010

beingbrad @GoldenAgeofGeek ack, does that mean every character needs to have a conclusion in proportion to their involvement in the story? #scriptchat -8:09 PM Jan 10th, 2010

jeannevb @scriptsnthings welcome! We're talking endings #scriptchat -8:08 PM Jan 10th, 2010

Timsn Endings great! Just saw a French film with a really ambiguous ending -- 35 Shots of Rum #scriptchat Enjoyed the film though -8:08 PM Jan 10th, 2010

manvsballoon I like an ending that makes an audience go, "woah" like Neo. Such endings to stories are rarely 100% upbeat #scriptchat -8:08 PM Jan 10th, 2010

authorViviAnna I dont' mind loose ends either, but I hate it when it just ends with no resolution #scriptchat -8:08 PM Jan 10th, 2010

dawnbierschwal I like to know what my character has to be capable of at climax so I can prepare him/her throughout the script leading to that. #scriptchat -8:08 PM Jan 10th, 2010

yeah_write @zacsanford2 I agree in the sense of being let down, but it's the movie. DH and I are always amazed at the lame endings. #scriptchat -8:07 PM Jan 10th, 2010

GoldenAgeofGeek @beingbrad loose ends. Have to be careful when ur starting out. They don't know u and may think u just goofed #scriptchat -8:07 PM Jan 10th, 2010

dwacon I typically start with the ending and then try to map out how they got there. Sometimes it works, sometimes... scrap heap. #scriptchat -8:07 PM Jan 10th, 2010

derek_stewart @jeannevb I find that it's motivating and practical to work toward predetermined resolution but its always good to remain open, #scriptchat -8:06 PM Jan 10th, 2010

zacsanford2 things should be tied up usually. RT @beingbrad: Does satisfying mean it ties everything up? Are loose ends allowed? #scriptchat -8:06 PM Jan 10th, 2010

Timsn The first question I ask on an idea is how does it end #scriptchat Of course the end could change but not all that much usually -8:03 PM Jan 10th, 2010

rachlanger @GoldenAgeofGeek Agreed. I work off of an outline/beatsheet. Therefore ending is mapped out in advance. #scriptchat -8:03 PM Jan 10th, 2010

kimnunley I've got to have the ending somewhat set out, but I do allow myself to tweak it if needed as I write #scriptchat -8:03 PM Jan 10th, 2010

dawnbierschwal I think it's important to have a satisfying ending... whether that's a happy ending or not. #scriptchat -8:03 PM Jan 10th, 2010
