#Scriptchat Transcript: Writing Outside Your Comfort Zone September 25, 2016

They say "write what you know," but it's often more valuable to write far outside your comfort zone. Tonight we talked about men writing for women, women writing for men, one race writing for another, changing your writing process & more. Enjoy! @jeannevb

  1. IT’S #SCRIPTCHAT O’CLOCK talking writing outside your lane/comfort zone. Best site to chat from is here:  http://www.tchat.io/rooms/scriptchat
  2. Hope you're ready to get uncomfortable! Or at least are by the end of #scriptchat
  3. Hey hey. Missed last week, but I'm here now. Haven't gotten my writing mojo back, though #scriptchat
  4. Outside of my comfort zone. Horror and romance, definitely. #scriptchat
  5. Many writers are told "write what you know." Let's discuss the value of writing what you DON'T know. #scriptchat
  6. By "comfort zone" are we talking genre, format, subject matter... #scriptchat
  7. @jeannevb I tend to meet what I don't know with research so I know it. #scriptchat
  8. @rdlln all of the above. Writing new genre, writing female when you're male. Writing black when you're white, etc. #scriptchat
  9. Outside of comfort zone for me, so to speak, is that I like to write scripts with female leads. #scriptchat
  10. You know, I love screwball comedy but I can't write it. I feel like I have a blind spot for deception and trickery. #scriptchat
  11. #scriptchat writing outside comfort zones is definitely a way to grow
  12. Maybe because I'm so thoroughly aware of being male I find no interest in further exploring it. #scriptchat
  13. @Al_1701 And let's be fair, guys aren't that interesting. At least I'm not. #scriptchat
  14. @Al_1701 what do you find is the value in writing for the opposite sex? What have you learned? #scriptchat
  15. Sure thing! I've read quite a bit about this, so I've been curious as to what my fellow screenwriters think about t…  https://twitter.com/i/web/status/780196349643849728
  16. A1: Writing outside of yourself comfort makes you able to adapt more. #scriptchat
  17. Going back to features, after writing 5 pilots, is outside my comfort zone #scriptchat
  18. @jgsarantinos Short format mediums like short films or webseries are definitely out of my comfort zone. #scriptchat
  19. @JonFour @jgsarantinos When I do short, they tend to be glimpses of characters, not whole stories #scriptchat
  20. @jeannevb I've learned that many of the motivations are similar with differences coming from reasoning. #scriptchat
  21. I've been working on an African-Am story for 8 years. Pink elephant in the room when I pitch is, "But you're white!" #scriptchat
  22. Obviously, I know I'm white, so I address that right away & speak to what the THEME is of the story & why it speaks to me. #scriptchat
  23. So, when writing outside of your area of comfort, what are some parts you struggle with? #scriptchat
  24. Relating to the theme is what helps us write outside our comfort zone on the specifics, whether it be genre, race, etc. #scriptchat
  25. For me in writing female leads, I tend to overthink a bit because I want to be certain to avoid stereotypes. #scriptchat
  26. If you can find a way to relate to the theme, then none of that matters & the writing will be organic. #scriptchat
  27. Really, outside of my comfort zone is the mundane because I find the mundane boring and something I wouldn't pay to see. #scriptchat
  28. @jeannevb Nothing wrong with writingabout an African-Am story. It gives you a chance to break of your normal pattern. Kudos! #scriptchat
  29. Biggest problem with writing out of the comfort zone is just coming up with ideas... Don't do comedy. #scriptchat
  30. I've never gotten the appeal of Slice of Life. I have a life I can live already. #scriptchat
  31. #scriptchat We wrote a black lover into our mostly white story. Readers who know that world were crucial.
  32. @PeoplesCourt79 writing stereotypes is an easy thing to fall into. Do you have women read your scripts to doublechk you? #scriptchat
  33. @wdavisliterary jump on in, Whitney! Your taste in story is very outside your own world. #scriptchat
  34. If all my characters had the same ethnic make-up as me, grew up in the same place as me, that would make for a dull script. #scriptchat
  35. I'm currently writng a script about Spongebob in order to get into Nickelodean Fellowship. But I'm not a SpongeBob fan at all! #scriptchat
  36. @jeannevb @PeoplesCourt79 I say, let the stereotypes come out freely in the first draft, but recognize them when you rewrite. #scriptchat
  37. #scriptchat I always write what I don't know. Like my assassin character :)
  38. I've been listening to actors and their thoughts on diversity and representation. i want to be mindful. #scriptchat
  39. @byChrisPhillips re: ideas, the trick might be to just let your mind go & "close the door" as Stephen King says. #scriptchat
  40. But I figure writing outside of my element or zone can help me increase my range. #scriptchat
  41. @PeoplesCourt79 I've done several scripts (unfinished) about things and experiences I don't know, just bc I thought it'd be... #scriptchat
  42. @PeoplesCourt79 ...a good story. Once I feel less enthusiastic about the concept, though, I tend to abandon those projects. #scriptchat
  43. I also like choosing a location/setting I have never traveled to/set foot in. #scriptchat
  44. The horror community needs work. I'm working to change it. #scriptchat
  45. @writeranthonydp oh yeah! I haven't killed anyone IRL, but damn, nothing uncomfortable about shanking a character :) #scriptchat
  46. @clpike_horror I love that nowadays you can take a "virtual trip" there to check it out for yourself. #scriptchat
  47. So if there's someone out there nervous to start that next script, our goal tonight is to push you past that fear. #scriptchat
  48. @jeannevb I think the problem really is that certain genres just have their own designs to learn... #scriptchat
  49. I've actually been working on something way out of my realm of knowledge. #scriptchat
  50. @clpike_horror I totally agree. The horror community needs to improve on the idea of what is consider scary. #scriptchat
  51. @jeannevb I ❤️ interviewing ppl when dealing w/theme outside of my world. It inspires me 2 look thru a different lens. #scriptchat
  52. @Al_1701 the danger is not to get bogged down by research. I tend to drown in it. #scriptchat
  53. @byChrisPhillips so true. I write diff't genres, but drama is the most organic for me. Do you write multiple genres? #scriptchat
  54. I would love to hear from anyone who feels that we possible should NOT write outside a "comfort zone and why. #scriptchat
  55. I find that wherever I live, I do not pay attention to my surroundings/details. Familiarity breeds dullness/no creative spark. #scriptchat
  56. I've noticed that I'll shift genres, but the core of what's there: characters in pain, unconventional families, etc remain #scriptchat
  57. @Al_1701 I read 1911 Alabama constitution & an entire book on a White House dinner btwn Teddy Roosevelt & Booker T Washington ha #scriptchat
  58. @PeoplesCourt79 @jeannevb For sure. There's always a balance when creating things that are recognizable, but not too overdone. #scriptchat
  59. (1) One good argument AGAINST leaving your comfort zone in the beginning is because you want to be confident to start out. #scriptchat
  60. @JLalliWriter Definitely. Give me fiction as alien to my surroundings as possible. #scriptchat
  61. @jeannevb What motivates you to start that "next script" ? How do you jump right into it? #scriptchat
  62. (2) Not to say we should ALWAYS remain there, but when sticking with what you know, you're more likely to finish that first... #scriptchat
  63. @nicolaslucky27 I hate starting scripts so I have a writing partner who makes me stop researching & pushing me off a cliff haha #scriptchat
  64. MT @jeannevb: if there's someone out there nervous to start that next script, our goal tonight is to push you past that fear. #scriptchat
  65. (3) ...and if you start with something you aren't familiar with, you may be more likely to quit once you get stuck. #scriptchat
  66. @blueneumann Same with me. Themes of underdogs and strained family relationships are almost constant for me regardless of genre. #scriptchat
  67. @jeannevb @nicolaslucky27 I love starting new ideas... the second 3rd of the script, though... #scriptchat
  68. I write small amounts every day. That way, I can't over think. I just put it down and go back to watching horror movies. #scriptchat
  69. 3 pages. boom. done. It's hard to obsess over small sprints. #scriptchat
  70. Prob most fun TV script I wrote was Victorian era, whore house hostage takeover. Now that was fun! #scriptchat
  71. RT @jeannevb: Many writers are told "write what you know." Let's discuss the value of writing what you DON'T know. #scriptchat
  72. @filmwritr4 Yes, it's definitely easier to want to abandon projects outside your comfort zone once you get a bit stuck. #scriptchat
  73. @jeannevb Was it a pilot or part of an existing series? The Die Hard episode of Downton Abbey? #scriptchat
  74. @jeannevb @blueneumann You kno I had people tell me that I'm good at writing stories that are funny & that it's good I can do it #scriptchat
  75. @PeoplesCourt79 @blueneumann @jeannevb I've had so many script ideas for things I knew nothing about, careers, situations #scriptchat
  76. @nicolaslucky27 @jeannevb My CHARACTERS are funny, but they're not comedies. Wacky things don't happen #scriptchat
  77. @blueneumann for a series we had funding for and talent attached but financiers back out at last min. But man, I had a blast! #scriptchat
  78. @JLalliWriter Yes! I have heard that as well. Many would be more expecting of me to write about black or man "topics." #scriptchat
  79. @PeoplesCourt79 @jeannevb I wonder if it's life experiences/universal truths that can help with writing out of that comfort zone #scriptchat
  80. Hey gang, late to the chat - hello! - I thought it was fascinating that four white writers were up for an Oscar for 'Compton'... #scriptchat
  81. The idea that writers should stick to their own perspective/experience/background is a dangerous & hateful one #scriptchat
  82. @PeoplesCourt79 you write about women and I write about black men. Go figure. :) #scriptchat
  83. From the viewers standpoint, do you feel some stories out there aren't written well because of this? #scriptchat
  84. @PeoplesCourt79 @jeannevb And applying those to each script, even if you don't know what the character's going through... #scriptchat
  85. @wcmartell said it best... It's a business. See what the studios are buying. Checkout the top 20 grossing films of the year. #scriptchat
  86. @jeannevb @blueneumann Because u kno there is a different between telling a joke & writing a joke. People can't distinguish them #scriptchat
  87. @PeoplesCourt79 @jeannevb ...or has never experienced the situations your characters are in, the stories you're telling, etc. #scriptchat
  88. @jgsarantinos Good point also. I sometimes feel I need to try several and once I get attention, then zero in on that. #scriptchat
  89. Just a side note, if any of you are writing action, @wcmartell's book about Bourne series is on sale right now. Bill, link us? #scriptchat
  90. @SeatownCraig Well, they didn't have to dream it, just take real events and put them in order #scriptchat
  91. Now that I finally have a job, I should start building my library. #scriptchat
  92. Exactly. Our age/gender/ethnicity are other factors that may cause us to be pigeon holed by the biz. #scriptchat  https://twitter.com/peoplescourt79/status/780200479997304832
  93. I have a project with all these characters lying and trying to sabotage each other. So hard to write b/c I'm not that guy #scriptchat
  94. Hi #scriptchat Just joining. I'm another male who prefers writing female leads, or ppl different from myself but w/universal emotions.
  95. #scriptchat I'll pop up a link in the final 5 minutes! On sale until Friday!
  96. @Al_1701 I bet you can find a bunch of used screenwriting books cheap on ebay or craig's #scriptchat
  97. @PeoplesCourt79 I think that if you identify with someone’s experience, that would definitely help with the script. #scriptchat
  98. And I love the characters too, I want to tell their story, but I just don't know how they lash out #scriptchat
  99. #scriptchat It's always good to read shane black and Tony Gilroy before writing a thriller.
  100. @jeannevb procrastination is so much fun!...sometimes haha. It's like the distant cousin to bullshittin lol #scriptchat
  101. It's not just a topic that can be outside comfort, but also writing process. Try to change up your process. Try something new. #scriptchat
  102. @blueneumann My stories aren't wacky, they are just...they are unique in humuor. I'm like a Black Monty Python haha #scriptchat
  103. On another hand, do any of you feel that the stereotypes sometimes still work? (The dumb blonde; constant "fat" jokes, etc.) #scriptchat
  104. @jeannevb That is so much harder. You're asking me to actually be different. #scriptchat
  105. Re: process, I'm an outliner/researcher. My partner @UnkScreenwriter researches but he does rough map then dives in. #scriptchat
  106. @jeannevb Yes. My process varies with every project. Also fun to write with a partner for a change. #scriptchat
  107. So on our latest script, he pushed me off the cliff & said JUST WRITE. Terrifying to be unprepared for me but then I loved it! #scriptchat
  108. If you're triggered by a middle class, middle-aged, white guy writing about a poor, teenaged black girl - you are the problem #Scriptchat
  109. @jeannevb I totally agree about the writing process. Sometimes it doesn't hit as it should usually hit. Writer's Block is an ass #scriptchat
  110. @PeoplesCourt79 I like doing trope-y characters, but when you do them, you need to be doing them for a reason. #scriptchat
  111. @jeannevb About to be in this situation. Currently write on train, but soon I'll be moving and not taking the train anymore. #scriptchat
  112. I love writing out of my comfort zone. I cross my fingers it's somewhat good! #scriptchat
  113. @PeoplesCourt79 Think "Breakfast Club" or "Five Characters In Search Of An Exit." #scriptchat
  114. @nicolaslucky27 @jeannevb Been blocked for a week, since Daisy died. Took the wind out of my sails. #scriptchat
  115. What also led me to write female leads is because I tend to look up to women more than men, being raised by a single mother. #scriptchat
  116. @rdlln did you ever read "She's Come Undone" I think by Wally Lamb. Amazing! His main char was an adolescent girl. Great! #scriptchat
  117. Too many men write a cliched, or male fantasy version of a woman character. We are so much more complex than that. #scriptchat
  118. @blueneumann Sigh. I'm sorry, Chris. Sometimes you need to take that time off though to process & heal @nicolaslucky27 #scriptchat
  119. Problem with characters is what we "perceive" as authentic. It's hard to break out of cliche sometimes. #scriptchat
  120. @blueneumann Been block since the summer...I hate the summer. The ideas are in my head, but the pen and hand are not cooperating #scriptchat
  121. @jeannevb @PeoplesCourt79 @blueneumann I think for me it just comes down to writing characters in identifiable situations. #scriptchat
  122. I get the most satisfaction when I've tackled the scene I've put off for a week and come up with something totally unexpected #scriptchat
  123. @byChrisPhillips totally agree. For me, when I find the character's wound, that gets them out of the cliche zone. #scriptchat
  124. @filmwritr4 @jeannevb @blueneumann Definitely. People have to be able to relate. I think all can be forgiven if that's there. #scriptchat
  125. @nicolaslucky27 When I was a kid summer was great for creativity. No school, plenty of sun, exercise, TV, and drawing! #scriptchat
  126. @jeannevb @PeoplesCourt79 People may not be in the same job/world as the characters, but their situations must be relatable #scriptchat
  127. We're half done. Hope someone lurking is getting some balls to dive into that tough project! #scriptchat
  128. @jeannevb @PeoplesCourt79 I think, for me, research regarding subjects/career worlds of characters would be the tough part #scriptchat
  129. I've had to an idea knocking around. A native Hawaiian navy veteran who can turn into a humanoid shark. #scriptchat
  130. @blueneumann Yea as a kid it was cool. But now that Im in grad school I'm like damn. I did draw this summer! So that was awesome #scriptchat
  131. Currently working on a script set in the porn world. Research, research, research. #scriptchat
  132. @blueneumann It's meant for younger audiences. He is the mentor character for a younger team of heroes. #scriptchat
  133. This is great stuff. It's great to talk to others who can relate. I sometimes question whether to continue on my pa…  https://twitter.com/i/web/status/780204326186684416
  134. @jeannevb More like blue balls haha yeah I might see what kind of brain juice I got to start writing again...lol #scriptchat
  135. @blueneumann I've how he works as a shark man down better than how he works as a human. #scriptchat
  136. @blueneumann Yes. Well, amphibius since they can breathe both water and air. #scriptchat
  137. @jeannevb Do you recommend Final Draft? I'm going to buy it this upcoming week! Hopefully it get me writing again. #scriptchat
  138. @PeoplesCourt79 What can male writers writing female characters learn from your experience? #scriptchat
  139. @nicolaslucky27 yes, it's industry standard. They're newest version just came out. #scriptchat
  140. @rdlln When asked why you're best placed/person to write that script what would be your answer? #scriptchat
  141. @jeannevb Cool beans! I heard they got a student discount. SO I'm going to use the benefit of being a student. #scriptchat
  142. @nicolaslucky27 @jeannevb I can recommend version 9. Does a lot of really helpful things. Haven't tried v10 #scriptchat
  143. @nicolaslucky27 @jeannevb remember to back up your scripts to a drive... lesson learned hard way #scriptchat
  144. And make sure you label and organize where these backups are! #scriptchat
  145. @filmwritr4 For me, it allows us to learn about women in general. The situations they face and how THEY handle them. #scriptchat
  146. @byChrisPhillips @nicolaslucky27 @jeannevb I don't use FD to its fullest potential. Guess that's also related to comfort zone. #scriptchat
  147. How many of you have tried a different writing process? Outllning when you don't normally, writing backstory for chars, etc? #scriptchat
  148. You can't just back yoru stuff up. make sure you keep an organized computer so you know where everything is! #scriptchat
  149. @PeoplesCourt79 Definitely. Once you understand what they go through, and how they handle situations, it definitely helps. #scriptchat
  150. @filmwritr4 Also, respect and feelings for women may lead us to want to inject our perspective. But this trains us not to. #scriptchat
  151. @jeannevb I switched after taking @GoIntoTheStory 's classes years ago. Love this way much better #scriptchat
  152. @jeannevb I've tried different methods because i still don't know what is best for me. #scriptchat
  153. @jeannevb I've tried so many different approaches. I find that different scripts call for different approaches...anyone else? #scriptchat
  154. @nicolaslucky27 Oh, I do use FD v9. What I meant was I don't use all the functionality it offers and should try to change that. #scriptchat
  155. @jeannevb ...situations are handled. I can easily speak from my perspective, but I want to profoundly get the other side. #scriptchat
  156. @jeannevb @PeoplesCourt79 @writeranthonydp It always helps to have something to work from, because it can be hard to work... #scriptchat
  157. @jeannevb Also, certain stereotypes of women need to die already. I want to contribute to taking care of that as well. #scriptchat
  158. @blueneumann we'll have to get @GoIntoTheStory to come back on as a guest to talk about writing process then! :) #scriptchat
  159. @jeannevb @PeoplesCourt79 @writeranthonydp ...without having created an outline/bios/beat sheet before writing the script #scriptchat
  160. I outline and other stuff, but can't really get going until I've found the perfect names for the main characters. #scriptchat
  161. @ScripTipps Samehere... and I like to cast my characters too, so I can see and hear them in my head #scriptchat
  162. I still use the free version of Celtx. Final Draft is way out of my reach at the moment. #scriptchat
  163. @blueneumann I did that a lot. I try not to work without at least some rough outline/paragraphs detailing the story/characters #scriptchat
  164. @Al_1701 Still beats Microsoft Word. Or Nisus Writer, which is what I used to do #scriptchat
  165. @Al_1701 @jeannevb Agree David. On current screenplay grinding gears trying to outline, regain momentum when I write in scene #scriptchat
  166. I'm actually writing my latest idea as a book (I'm an author as well) first. I normally don't outline, but this tim…  https://twitter.com/i/web/status/780207115981860864
  167. And email the file to yourself, use drop box, external hard drive, thumb drives, etc. Redundancy is your friend.…  https://twitter.com/i/web/status/780207165772402688
  168. @clpike_horror @Al_1701 I just started working on a story outline, using The Coffee Break Screenwriter by @onthepage #scriptchat
  169. Bios with tons of backstory are great, even though I won't use most of it. #scriptchat
  170. Shoutout some tips for writers out there: What do you do when you feel frozen & can't get comfortable being UNcomfortable? #scriptchat
  171. #scriptchat Bios are nice. Not to detailed but they actually do help.
  172. @ScripTipps @JonFour Yeah. I've done some extensive ones, but I feel bios should focus on flaws, redeeming qualities... #scriptchat
  173. @ScripTipps @JonFour ...and how they got to the situation they find themselves in now #scriptchat
  174. @jeannevb I can a little jogging trampoline. Bouncing somehow gets the mind working. #scriptchat
  175. Do any of you feel as if you've become good or even an "expert" at an outside-your-comfort-zone area? #scriptchat
  176. @writeranthonydp I find them helpful if I've dropped the story or characters for a while #scriptchat
  177. Backstory doesn't do much for thrillers. You just character traits, and the flaw. #scriptchat
  178. @Al_1701 @jeannevb I meditate, drive my truck, do something else. sometimes i just journal about it. #scriptchat
  179. @jeannevb I like to dance haha I know it'srandom, but dancing gets me ready to working! Pandora and the speakers on deck! #scriptchat
  180. For masterpiece genre with lots of interplay between characters, you need to know the connections and history #scriptchat
  181. @PeoplesCourt79 after almost 8 yrs working on #slaverybyanothename, I could pretty much qualify as an historian! ha #scriptchat
  182. @jeannevb I didn't do a lot of back story in baseball drama/comedy or in recent action-com, but notes & visualization help. #scriptchat
  183. @jeannevb (2)...such as "Golden Girls," "Desperate Housewives," "Living Single," "Nashville," and others. #scriptchat
  184. Having written a novel in 1st-person, writing a char bio as a diary is a great way inside their head. #scriptchat
  185. @blueneumann @nicolaslucky27 @jeannevb Very interesting. I sometimes imagine scenes set to film score soundtrack cues #scriptchat
  186. @jeannevb Sometimes I play pool too! Schooling people in pool is fun! It gets me ready to kick ass in writing. #scriptchat
  187. @filmwritr4 Ever heard of Two Steps From Hell? They're great for that kind of thing #scriptchat
  188. @jeannevb I'm more nervous about the next project, so I might try something different! #scriptchat
  189. @byChrisPhillips Lots! I wrote a novel under pen name & @UnkScreenwriter & I have TV show & features, even a horror one #scriptchat
  190. @filmwritr4 Look them up on Youtube. TONS of awesome soundtrack-y tracks. #scriptchat
  191. (sorry I'm not even lurking today - computer power source is dead so I'm racing the clock on batteries!) #scriptchat
  192. @byChrisPhillips SBAN is just the one everyone wants to talk about. But it's opened a lot of doors for me. Passion project. #scriptchat
  193. @byChrisPhillips @jeannevb @UnkScreenwriter Awesome! Wishing you guys the very best of luck and success with those projects! #scriptchat
  194. @PeoplesCourt79 Not expert or good. But been researching crime & now watch drama crime tv shows yelling out corrections. ;) Lol #scriptchat
  195. Each character sees the story differently. Write those outlines from each character's pov. #scriptchat
  196. Quick question for everybody. What kind of advice would you recomment to a young aspiring writer like myself...Everything helps! #scriptchat
  197. @OnTheGo_C @PeoplesCourt79 I tried writing a drama/miniseries with courtroom scenes, but never knew procedure #scriptchat
  198. @nicolaslucky27 One thing that has helped me is downloading scripts and then reading along while watching the movie. #scriptchat
  199. @nicolaslucky27 Watch movies, TV shows and read the scripts they were written for. #scriptchat
  200. @nicolaslucky27 It's been especially beneficial for me, including when I write comedy #scriptchat
  201. @nicolaslucky27 If you watch multi-cam shows, you'll get to experience the flow of the jokes/dialogue, be familiar with it #scriptchat
  202. @blueneumann A script about Dancers. I like that! That sounds real promising. :D #scriptchat
  203. @nicolaslucky27 You'll experience the same with single camera shows, but the jokes aren't always as obvious #scriptchat
  204. @writeranthonydp @nicolaslucky27 I hate the "aspiring" label. If you're writing, you're a writer. Just sit your ass in the chair #scriptchat
  205. I used to watch a lot of foreign movies. They do things differently, makes you rethink structure, pacing. #scriptchat
  206. @byChrisPhillips Every time I see a foreign flick, part of my mind thinks "ok, how would the remake go?" #scriptchat
  207. @byChrisPhillips OMG... Dogtooth... he also did Lobster. Totally different way of thinking about pacing. #scriptchat
  208. @JLalliWriter Yes, the cliches. No male "version" of a female character. We can't do that. I completely agree. #scriptchat
  209. @filmwritr4 @PeoplesCourt79 That's a bummer! Could be a project you go back to or research you use for another project. #scriptchat
  210. Thanks for a great hour! Hopefully someone out there is ready to write outside of their comfort zone now! #scriptchat
  211. Not sure of topic for next week. Stay tuned! Feel free to shoot me topic ideas during the week for upcoming #scriptchat
  212. @OnTheGo_C @PeoplesCourt79 I know! I did go back to it briefly, though, but got rid of the courtroom stuff #scriptchat
  213. Grabbing the transcript and will post it soon. Thanks again, everyone! Now get writing! #scriptchat
