Does Story Dictate Character or Does Character Dictate Story? Transcript April 28, 2013

We've been having transcript errors the past few weeks, and every week we think it's fixed, it happens again. The fallout has been losing our EURO transcript. I'm still desperately trying to obtain the missing transcripts. We'll have to figure out a more solid plan B going forward, and we will. If any of you know of a transcript solution, please email me at jeanne@scriptchat.com

It's #SCRIPTCHAT O'CLOCK talking 'Does story dictate character OR does character dictate story?'

Daily Dialogue theme for the week: Making a scene. Today: "When Harry Met Sally" (1989) http://t.co/fviz4ZdF6z #scriptchat

Let's bring on the character/story debate. #scriptchat

Good evening #scriptchat

@RWWFilm @SarahAlexis4 *waves* welcome aboard #scriptchat

Well, that was easy. WHo needs a refill? RT @PitchfestBob: Character dictates story. NEXT! :- #scriptchat
Retweeted by Jeanne V Bowerman

@zacsanford2 You LIE! I was there late fall, it was a bit cold. I was there start of summer, a bit warm. I want to come baaack! #scriptchat

@DannyManus hey, pop into the chat. We're talking Does story dictate character OR does character dictate story? #scriptchat

Once I created my char, I knew what arc he had to go through, therefore I think char is most important. #scriptchat
Retweeted by Jeanne V Bowerman

I think u can start w either. Eventually,by the time you're done outlining, both should be influencing each other #scriptchat

@nicsigni I'm the same way. It's ALL about character for me. Hooks are one thing but we execute them via chars #scriptchat

Thank goodness @PitchfestBob was able to answer that for us! What should we tackle next? :) #scriptchat

@hamishd10 I'm with ya #scriptchat

When I 1st started writing, watched Hero's Two Journeys DVD. Great @ showing how story & character co-exist & depend on ea other #scriptchat

@DannyManus That's my usual path as well. concept helps me develop the MC, & then a well developed MC helps develop the concept #scriptchat

I'm running a bit late. I'll be there soon. #ScriptChat

They say that a feature is about the plot and a TV series is about the world, or it's about the characters. #scriptchat

@DannyManus I had faith in you : #scriptchat

Story comes from character. Character evolves as your story advances. #scriptchat

And once you have your protagonist, you design other characters to conflict and contrast with them, creating story. #scriptchat

A story is a series of causes and effects. The actions of your protagonist are the causes, IMHO. #scriptchat
Retweeted by Signe Olynyk

@zacsanford2 @IngridElkner totally agree re: TV. Like Don on Mad Men is irritating me this season. Making me lose interest #scriptchat

Q for all: What's your favorite character in a film that really MADE the film's success? #scriptchat

@zacsanford2 Precisely. In selling a TV series you're also selling a world. That's why when pitching TV, plot isn't as important #scriptchat

agree, agree, agree : RT @byDougRich: @jeannevb Character Character Character #scriptchat
Retweeted by Jeanne V Bowerman

Find an interesting premise. Populate it with a unique protagonist. They will each advance the other. #scriptchat

@PitchfestBob Or just the fact that it's on NBC #scriptchat

awesome example RT @Daleylife: Annie Wilkes from MISERY is a pretty good character that drove the story. #scriptchat
Retweeted by Jeanne V Bowerman

@jeannevb Indy in Raiders #scriptchat

@GCGeek Funny you say that, I'm working on a horror anthology series here in Melbourne :p #scriptchat

Hannibal too RT @SarahAlexis4: @jeannevb Clarice Starling is one example for me. And Ripley in Alien. #scriptchat
Retweeted by Jeanne V Bowerman

@zacsanford2 good point. Amazing acting totally elevates the writing. #scriptchat

@zacsanford2 Selling a TV series is selling a world. When pitching TV, plot is secondary. #scriptchat
Retweeted by Signe Olynyk

I find that, once you're writing, if the story is driving the character, it's probably not the right character for that story. #scriptchat

@DannyManus I love the bad boys #scriptchat

@Daleylife Great to have you back #scriptchat

@PitchfestBob That's awesome! lol #scriptchat

@DannyManus Mike Myers? As in Austin Powers? haha. But Austin Powers is a great example of a strong film character. #scriptchat

Your ANTAGONIST can make you think of a great story. Freddy, Jason, Mike Myers, Candyman #scriptchat
Retweeted by Signe Olynyk

When I read a great script/book, it's usually the characters that linger in my mind more than the plot #scriptchat

@DannyManus haha #scriptchat

@PitchfestBob @DannyManus Thanks Bob. Now I want to see Alan Rickman play The Joker when they reboot Batman #scriptchat

@RWWFilm Mine starts with character, concept grows out protagonist, then they feed off each other #scriptchat
Retweeted by Signe Olynyk

Retweeted by Signe Olynyk

FYI, @Screenwriter12 and @PitchfestBob from Great Am Pitchfest are our guests next week! #GAPF #scriptchat

@Cilly247 That's interesting. My brainstorming always starts w/ concept. #scriptchat

Some of my favourite projects came out of "What if?" Quickly a character gave birth to itself and the world, story & cast grew. #scriptchat

@Screenwriter12 Definitely had your BELOW ZERO chars lingering a LONG time after! #scriptchat

@IngridElkner "WHAT IF?" is my favorite question when I write... and in life. #scriptchat

@PitchfestBob And we've got ourselves a pitch. How many Rickman roles can we squeeze into one character! #scriptchat

@Daleylife Always re-thinking your writing process helps make you a good writer. #scriptchat

we like to mess with minds here #mwhaha RT @Daleylife: im really rethinking my writing process right now. lol. #scriptchat
Retweeted by Jeanne V Bowerman

@zacsanford2 Definitely concept, then add the characters. #scriptchat

i love HALLOWEEN btw. proves a scary film doesnt need gore. #scriptchat

Importance of character: ROBOCOP without Robocop is just 2013 Detroit. #scriptchat
Retweeted by Erick Mertz

A writer pal "method writes". He lives/acts like his hero until he nails an outline...he's divorced 3x now. :P #scriptchat
Retweeted by Erick Mertz

I pretty much never shut up about Bill Martell's books, but read his Creating Strong Protagonists blue book. Really fantastic. #scriptchat

Through this book I've been extracting my own flaws and demons to put in my protag, and now it's creating story for her. #scriptchat

@IngridElkner How / Where can I get a copy, Ingrid? It's been recommended before, too. #scriptchat

@PitchfestBob Detroit looks like the Robocop world, doesn't it? :p #scriptchat

And like @DannyManus - as a reader, I read something bc of concept, but char & their journey is what sells it. #scriptchat
Retweeted by Jeanne V Bowerman

@PitchfestBob I'm going to write all my scripts in a freezer from now on. No distractions! #scriptchat

@Screenwriter12 @PitchfestBob No distractions, except the cold. #scriptchat

@zacsanford2 @rwwfilm Concept is fine. But character is why we watch and invest ourselves in the experience. #scriptchat

@Screenwriter12 Amazon. All very cheap too, around $3 each. I'm fussy about screenwriting books and these are gamechangers. #scriptchat

can I join u? RT @Screenwriter12: @PitchfestBob Im going to write all my scripts in a freezer from now on. No distractions! #scriptchat

@Screenwriter12 @PitchfestBob If you're method writing, I'd set your next horror script on the beaches of Cancun. #JustSayin #scriptchat

Terrific article. Thanks. RT @DannyManus: Perfect for this convo! http://t.co/WCZuvKwXpr #scriptchat

@IngridElkner @skcomedy Is the question more, "what if so-and-so" did something #scriptchat

@Screenwriter12 In Melbourne you can rent a cell in old Melbourne Prison as a writing office. Would be a cool place to write. #scriptchat

HAHA Let's pitch it at GAPF RT @PitchfestBob: And a reality show is born. RT @jeannevb: can I join u? RT @Screenwriter12: #scriptchat

@IngridElkner Like I needed another reason to go back to Australia! Awesome! #scriptchat

@Daleylife Yes. #scriptchat

@emertzwriting You'd have to have so-and-so already in your head. OR "What if scientists brought dinosaurs back?" #scriptchat

In Melbourne you can rent a cell in old Melbourne Prison as a writing office. Would be a cool place to write. #scriptchat

@IngridElkner Interesting example. Sounds like my current project. Oh wait, done already. #scriptchat

@Daleylife I'd humbly suggest changing that. It will make your life significantly easier :) #scriptchat

@zacsanford2 @Daleylife I was always told that's the best process, college essay, anything. #scriptchat

@Screenwriter12 The real convict experience! It's where our most famous bushranger, Ned Kelly was hanged. Part of my university! #scriptchat

@Daleylife We just had ten writers do a '48 Hour' Screenplay marathon this weekend , and they did exactly that! #scriptchat

@nicsigni @jeannevb And she's an example of a terrific character name, as well. #scriptchat

I find it easier to create world/plot/character for features- it's a finite problem. Comedy little harder. Drama is the hard one #scriptchat

@SarahAlexis4 I am writing from the haunted guest room #217 at the Stanley Hotel right now (where 'The Shining' was inspired). #scriptchat

@chris_coffel deal @PitchfestBob @Screenwriter12 #scriptchat

@SarahAlexis4 Most places are haunted, but it will only affect you if you are sensitive to those kinds of energies. #scriptchat

@Singleton_Paul @zacsanford2 I write holes/create spaces into my outlines, places to add material so I'm not feeling restricted. #scriptchat

@DannyManus thanks for popping in! #scriptchat

Ditto that, Danny. RT @jeannevb: @DannyManus thanks for popping in! #scriptchat
Retweeted by Erick Mertz

@Daleylife I love that feeling, when the story "writes itself." It means I've fleshed it out well in the outline. #scriptchat

You'll love this exercise my teacher taught: figure out protag's voice - where they grew up, class, attitude, speech style etc. #scriptchat

@DannyManus Thanks for stopping by. Hope the show brings lots of laughs. #scriptchat

Love when your characters take over and you just try to keep up with the voices in your head! #scriptchat

Then write a monologue, take 10 minutes. Then read it, and extract an A story (action/outer) and a B story (relationship/inner). #scriptchat

@stephanbugaj Characters do not need to be likeable. They must be relatable. #scriptchat

It's probably best for TV, but it's effective!! #scriptchat

@zacsanford2 @emertzwriting ditto. My outlines are the house, or even the blueprints, it's a pencil sketch on a napkin #scriptchat

@Daleylife Lucky for you. I used to write without an outline, but the plot holes were so big...now I outline first. #scriptchat

Creating chars, finding their wounds & letting those wounds help drive the plot is my favorite part of creating story #scriptchat

@SarahAlexis4 Yep. There's a reason why I haven't been on the Melb prison night tour. I've already seen scary shit elsewhere. #scriptchat

Character first works well for me when I start from a treatment. Then I feel badly because the character I love ins't active. #scriptchat

@SarahAlexis4 I call that 'dirty headlights writing'. When you write without an outline & don't know where story is going. #scriptchat

@stephanbugaj I actually wrote a column for @scriptmag abt that! n http://t.co/ZnyEtU4cpi #scriptchat

Regardng character, one word: Dexter #scriptchat

I usually start with character, then find the great concept that best explores the character or reverse engineer from concept. #scriptchat

@stephanbugaj I actually wrote a column for @scriptmag abt that! http://t.co/nxu4ifBqBQ #scriptchat
Retweeted by Jeanne V Bowerman

@PitchfestBob Oh, you're there NOW?! Creepy/awesome! #scriptchat

@zacsanford2 Absolutely. If it helps you get from A to B, then that's the way YOU should do it. #scriptchat

Creating chars, finding their wounds & letting those wounds drive the plot is my favorite part of creating story #scriptchat
Retweeted by Signe Olynyk

@jeannevb I think I'm the only person who wishes Dexter would stop the internal monologues about his own behavior. #scriptchat

Som big screenwriter interviewed in Script Mag ages ago doesn't outline. Writes 400 page 1st draft, saves 30 pages, repeats. #scriptchat

Join the club, we're all here. RT @Daleylife: i have a lot to learn... #scriptchat
Retweeted by Erick Mertz

@zacsanford2 We already built the world & put in the main characters. Then we stepped back to build the protag & source stories. #scriptchat

Amen RT @emertzwriting: Join the club, were all here. RT @Daleylife: i have a lot to learn... #scriptchat

@emertzwriting I'm just talking in general. His char is so interesting. #scriptchat

@wcmartell We were just talking about you! (Well, your books.) #scriptchat

That's the great thing abt #scriptchat discussions. It's not abt correcting each other, it's abt learning from each other.

Love it. RT @PitchfestBob: Chase your character up a tree & throw rocks at them. Let them figure out how to get down. #scriptchat
Retweeted by Erick Mertz

@zacsanford2 Enjoy the film fest. #scriptchat

@Daleylife Probably because last season of Dexter the plot was in a holding pattern where nothing really happened. #scriptchat
