TOPIC: Engineering the 'Emotional Bond' (Between Character & Audience)
When they work, movies can manipulate emotion more effectively than music or sports. But how does a screenwriter achieve on paper the identification necessary for a reader/audience to bond with a character? Many will be familiar with the standard tool (now cliche) of a "Pet-the-Dog" scene. But how exactly does that work and what can a screenwriter extrapolate from it to apply to other characters and scenarios?
