Best known for writing the irreverent, genre-bending cult horror hit, GINGER SNAPS, Karen is a multiple-award winning dramatic film and television writer. Internationally acclaimed for her fresh takes on uniquely compelling characters and socially-conscious stories, Karen has since applied her unique sense of the sardonic to over a dozen American, Canadian and British featuresʼ development, including co- writing Brad Peytonʼs original screenplay, BILLY GRIMM; an original romantic fantasy about a grim reaper accidentally created with a heart, which was optioned & developed by Sony Columbia & Mosaic Media in 2005. Her additional scripts include a Jersey Filmsʼ adaptation of Rachel Kleinʼs teen girl vampires THE MOTH DIARIES, Playtoneʼs animated adaptation of THE SPIDER AND THE FLY – both for Universal -, a remake of the Brigitte Bardot political sex-farce, LA PARISIENNE for TVA USA, and Mosaicʼs cheerleading vampire flick, ABSOLUTE ANGELS with director Gen Jolliffe, for Warner Brothers.
Most recently Karen has been co-writing her first French-language feature, the saucy Montreal sexcapade, SHOEBUSINESS, for THE YOUNG VICTORIAʼs Jean-Marc Vallee (C.R.A.ZY., CAFE DE FLORE). She also recently completed feature adaptations of Michael Turnerʼs international bestseller, THE PORNOGRAPHER’S POEM, and Guy Vanderhaeghe’s MY PRESENT AGE.
Karenʼs television credits include Executive Story Editing Season Two of Showtime’s QUEER AS FOLK USA, & CTV’s one-hour primetime drama, THE CITY. She also wrote episodes as a guest-writer for CTV’s THE ELEVENTH HOUR, and CBC’s STRAIGHT UP, DROP THE BEAT, & WHAT ITʼS LIKE BEING ALONE. Karen also wrote two true-story television movies; HEART – THE MARILYN BELL STORY, and won the Canadian Gemini Award for Best Movie or Miniseries Writing for THE MANY TRIALS OF ONE JANE DOE. Karen is currently developing her own first original paranormal quest series, ODARK – with Back Alley & Muse Entertainment (DURHAM COUNTY).
Holding a BA Honors in Drama from the University of Alberta, Karen is an alumni of Norman Jewisonʼs Canadian Film Centre feature screenwriting & short film programs. Her trophy collection includes a Gemini Award, a Canadian Comedy Award for Pretty Funny Screenplay, the CTV Banff International Television Festival fellowship Alumni Award, the Sondra Kelly Memorial Award, and a historic special citation from the Toronto International Film Festival for her GINGER SNAPS screenplay. In 2000, she was named one of Variety Magazine’s Top 10 Writers to Watch.
In 2009, Karen was awarded the Writers Guild of Canada’s prestigious Writers Block Award for her out-standing service to the Canadian screenwriting community at large for her mentorship of young and under-represented writers in Canada. A member of the Writers Guild of America – West, the Writers Guild of Canada & Quebec’s SARTEC, Karen originally hails from Nova Scotia. She spent her teens and early adulthood in Edmonton, Alberta before settling in Toronto in 1994.
