EURO Horror vs Thriller and USA Guest Danny Manus Transcript March 6, 2011

#Scriptchat TOPIC:
EURO: Horror or Thriller: The Monster vs. Suspense
USA: Guest Danny Manus @DannyManus script consultant

EURO had a great discussion of the differences and similarities between horror and thriller.  As always, we had many opinions and hopefully have writers now willing to take on a new genre.  USA chat welcomed Danny Manus to discuss all aspects of the business.  The chat was fast and furious, so read the transcript to see what you missed. Enjoy! @jeannevb

EURO moderator: Mina Zaher, @DreamsGrafter
USA moderator: Jeanne Veillette Bowerman, @jeannevb

8:02 pm            DreamsGrafter:            Some writers when writing a horror forget about the monster ... w/ a passive protagonist, the monster is crucial in a horror. #scriptchat

8:03 pm            matthewmilam1:            #scriptchat I don't think you need a monster in horror for it to work. Lots of Lights Out storeis were centered around horrible situations

8:11 pm            Bang2write:            The best Horrors bring out the WORST in characters, so monster is not the only problem, ie. THE MIST #scriptchat

8:31 pm            FreddoJr:            There's a fine line between thrillers & horror. Silence Of The Lambs & Se7en use horror to emphasize the thrill. #scriptchat
8:31 pm            DreamsGrafter:            We're halfway through Horror & Thriller discussion: Monster vs. Suspense. Feel free to jump in! #scriptchat
8:31 pm            Jonathan_Peace:            @DreamsGrafter innate horror in the human psyche Vs overt classical horror in terms of jumps and gore. I like a combination #scriptchat
8:31 pm            sweettweenie:            #scriptchat has anyone seen Human Centipede? Scary or just gore?
8:32 pm            AlexisNiki:            @Jonathan_Peace @DreamsGrafter Innate horror speaks to me more than jumps. Just the thought of "Burial" freaked me out! #scriptchat
8:33 pm            Charles118xx:            Kaneto Shindo's 'onibaba' where she's smashing her with a hammer to get the mask off... Shudder. #scriptchat
8:33 pm            AlexisNiki:            @Jonathan_Peace @DreamsGrafter I mean "Buried." See how freaked I am? Can't even remember the title LOL! #scriptchat
8:33 pm            DreamsGrafter:            @devmov If JK ever wants to discuss development of her script on #scriptchat, she's more than welcome if she's on twitter. Just say.
8:34 pm            matthewmilam1:            #scriptchat I think another problem with horror is lack of connectablity
8:34 pm            matthewmilam1:            #scriptchat I could connect with Paul and his struggle in "Buried", especially the fact he did it for his family
8:35 pm            sweettweenie:            @FreddoJr I think what stops Se7en from being horror is that the protagonist believes he's the hunter. If you know what I mean #scriptchat
8:35 pm            FreddoJr:            @sweettweenie Human Centipede is not very gory. It shows very little and is scarier for it. Very creepy, lots of fun. #scriptchat
8:35 pm            DreamsGrafter:            @robinkelly1 @janetvaneeden Re Paranormal Activity. Gr8 script. No wonder it has mass appeal. In ways also a relationship drama #scriptchat
8:36 pm            matthewmilam1:            @cozyvibes I'm doing this as part of a chat with #scriptchat
8:36 pm            Charles118xx:            @matthewmilam1 science based horror works well with me, but I also enjoy primal folklore. #scriptchat
8:36 pm            DraconianOne:            Personally felt that Paranormal Activity suffered because I didn't care about the characters (or at least the bloke). #scriptchat
8:36 pm            matthewmilam1:            @DreamsGrafter @robinkelly1 @janetvaneeden #scriptchat I wasn't pulled my Paranormal Actvity.

8:36 pm            sweettweenie:            @FreddoJr good too know, the trailer just seems repulsive. I *might* give it a go. #scriptchat
8:37 pm            DraconianOne:            Same problem with Blair Witch Project - if the witch didn't kill the filmmakers, I was next in line. #scriptchat
8:37 pm            TaroJ:            #scriptchat I always find the horrors that show the least are the scariest. The scariest things happen in the audiences head
8:37 pm            DreamsGrafter:            @Jonathan_Peace I like where you're going. So much horror in the human psyche. If you can get a balance, v. powerful. #scriptchat
8:37 pm            DreamsGrafter:            Haha. RT @devmov: @DreamsGrafter JK's a fella! ; ) Getting mixed up there with JK Rowling maybe? haha #scriptchat
8:38 pm            kanundra:            @TaroJ I can agree with that. Nothing scarier than the human mind. #scriptchat

8:38 pm            DraconianOne:            @matthewmilam1 surely horror can have lots of connectability appealing to primal fear and nightmares of unknown #scriptchat

8:38 pm            robinkelly1:            @DreamsGrafter @janetvaneeden @matthewmilam1 Because of genre, I gave it a miss, didn't think it would be good but was surprised #scriptchat

8:39 pm            johnrackham:            @AlexisNiki Same here on Blair Witch. Also with My Little Eye - I couldn't wait for that lot to die. #scriptchat
8:40 pm            matthewmilam1:            @johnrackham #scriptchat that's what I mean by connectability, the people in blair which made you want them to die.
8:40 pm            DreamsGrafter:            What's the diff in protagonist between horror and thriller? i.e. A lot happens to a thriller protag too before they take action. #scriptchat

8:40 pm            TaroJ:            @DreamsGrafter I've been meaning to check out The Fog for ages #scriptchat
8:41 pm            robinkelly1:            There are many genres and sub-genres. The trick is to understand the conventions/tropes and yet be original. Gd characters help #scriptchat

8:43 pm            Screenwriter911:            @jeannevb Thanks 4 the RT's! #scriptchat tonight at 8?
8:43 pm            DreamsGrafter:            RT @devmov: @DreamsGrafter "the prepare to fight" montage is often a staple of both Thriller & Horror & moves protag from inaction to action #scriptchat
8:44 pm            Rickallden:            #scriptchat Jeepers Creepers is nice and creepy at the start, and then the monsters. And Signs?! Silly, silly aliens.
8:44 pm            DreamsGrafter:            @Jonathan_Peace Psychological horror ... what's the diff to psychological thriller? Have you got a monster? #scriptchat
8:44 pm            DraconianOne:            I think horror protagonist is or has potential to be a victim of antagonist much more so than in thrillers. #scriptchat
8:45 pm            jeannevb:            @Screenwriter911 yep ;) #scriptchat
8:45 pm            AlexisNiki:            @johnrackham Well then I'm glad I never heard of My Little Eye. #scriptchat
8:45 pm            Bang2write:            RT @devmov: #scriptchat "Flight and then Fight" is a crucial element of both the Thriller & the Horror.
8:45 pm            DraconianOne:            In both Silence of the Lambs and Se7en, the protagonists are not directly the target of the antagonists until the end #scriptchat
8:46 pm            Bang2write:            RT @devmov: @DreamsGrafter the biggest issue re: script development for @devmov was character motivation, We had to dig deep to make work #scriptchat
8:46 pm            DreamsGrafter:            @Rickallden Love Jeepers Creepers esp final sc. But I don't think I can watch it again (just in case I don't enjoy it as much). #scriptchat
8:47 pm            TaroJ:            #scriptchat a friend made this viral http://t.co/0vjV1or that really plays with the audiences understanding of the horror rules
8:47 pm            DreamsGrafter:            @TaroJ I watched The Fog as a kid as well as Evil Dead so those two films kinda preyed on my imagination. Haha. #scriptchat
8:47 pm            johnrackham:            Horrors tend to be about the survival of the characters, but in thrillers the protagonist's failure wld have wider implications. #scriptchat
8:47 pm            DraconianOne:            Generally I hate trying to differentiate between horror and thriller because, as already stated, there's so much crossover #scriptchat

8:49 pm            DreamsGrafter:            @DraconianOne For the writer it's important to know what they're trying to write. Each genre has reader/audience expectations. #scriptchat
8:49 pm            rumpunchprods:            #scriptchat a montage is a must in any low budget horror, I have one in mine YHAD - a drug montage I love it.

8:50 pm            Rickallden:            #scriptchat - It's a bit basic, I know - but I loosely define 'thrillers', to myself at least, as horrors that are more likely to happen.

8:52 pm            Charles118xx:            The concept of monsters and horrors right next to us but in a parallel dimension scares me. #scriptchat
8:52 pm            Michael_R_Grant:            My problem with many modern horrors is that characters exist only to die. I don't remember any of these cookie-cutter charas. #scriptchat

8:54 pm            Bang2write:            @johnrackham for me, Horrors are "larger than life", whereas Thrillers are filed under, "Could happen" - like @Rickallden #scriptchat
8:54 pm            Rickallden:            #scriptchat @DreamsGrafter Not as a consumer, nope. I'm not scared of monsters, but suspense scares the bejesus out of me.
8:54 pm            DreamsGrafter:            @Jonathan_Peace But yeah, totally. Monster doesn't have to be supernatural. #scriptchat
8:55 pm            sweettweenie:            @Michael_R_Grant you can many times guess at the start who's going to die first and who will the survivor(s) be #scriptchat

8:57 pm            DreamsGrafter:            @Rickallden What abt person who reads yr script? i.e. when they pick up what they think is a thriller & want thrills fr get-go. #scriptchat
8:57 pm            Jonathan_Peace:            @DreamsGrafter even in my Bubble-Butt horror, the mutants aren't as scary as the characters they're munching on. #scriptchat
8:57 pm            LynneRice:            #scriptchat I long for the 1970s occult films that play on universal fears, such as Rosemary's Baby, things that touch reality yet not.
8:57 pm            Bang2write:            @Rickallden @johnrackham having read a stack of spec and produced Thrillers and Horrors, I think it's only possible distinction #scriptchat
8:57 pm            johnrackham:            @Bang2write I'm not sure about that. I can think of plenty of real life horrors. #scriptchat
8:57 pm            Bang2write:            @Rickallden @jackrackham > BUT that distinction means EVERYTHING #scriptchat
8:57 pm            writermilam:            #scriptchat (matthewmilam1 here under another account) I think you can make horror from real life
8:57 pm            Michael_R_Grant:            @sweettweenie Yep! And they don't matter to the audience. Film becomes about set-piece kills with no emotional connection. #scriptchat
8:57 pm            sweettweenie:            RT: @TaroJ @Michael_R_Grant I think modern horrors are really a separate genre - more Gore Fests setting out to shock not scare #scriptchat

8:58 pm            robinkelly1:            I don't agree only hard-core horror or thriller fans can write the genres but some films try to do it and don't have a clue #scriptchat

8:58 pm            writermilam:            #scriptchat I think in fact you need to more than ever have a connectable horror with the fact that monsters have gotten samey.
8:58 pm            DraconianOne:            @Bang2Write but then you've got supernatural thrillers - could never happen and are larger than life but play to thriller tropes #scriptchat

9:00 pm            Bang2write:            @DraconianOne disagree the supernatural thriller *cldn't* happen: lots of ppl in real life terrorised by haunted houses, etc #scriptchat
9:01 pm            writermilam:            #scriptchat I think if you are trying to stick to a genre, then you should. But I'm one of those guys who does? (cont) http://deck.ly/~6o84I

9:05 pm            DraconianOne:            @Bang2write again, though, back to what could happen. Texas Chainsaw Massacre could happen but slots nicely into horror genre #scriptchat
9:05 pm            sweettweenie:            The Wicker Man is classed as a thriller, but could easily be classed as a horror. #scriptchat
9:05 pm            Bang2write:            @johnrackham serial killer is very much part of horror genre, tho. And whilst that *could happen*, 99.9% of us will never meet 1 #scriptchat
